چکیده

In the past, sensors networks in cities have been limited to fixed sensors, embedded in particular locations, under centralised control. Today, new applications can leverage wireless devices and use them as sensors to develop aggregated information. In this paper, we show that the emerging patterns unveiled through the analysis of large sets of aggregated digital footprints can provide novel insights into how people experience the city and into some of the drives behind these emerging patterns. This information has uses for local authorities, researchers, as well as service providers such as mobile network operators. To explore this capacity for quantifying urban attractiveness, we performed a case study using the distribution and density of digital footprints in the area of the New York City Waterfalls, a public art project of four man-made waterfalls rising from the New York Harbor. Methods to study the impact of an event of this nature are traditionally based on the collection of static information such as surveys and ticket-based people counts, which allow to generate estimates about visitors’ presence in specific areas over time. In contrast, our contribution makes use of the dynamic data that visitors generate, such as the amount and distribution of aggregate phone calls and photos taken in different areas of interest and over time. Our analysis provides novel ways to quantify the impact of the public art exhibit on the distribution of visitors and the attractiveness of points of interest in the proximity of the event.

Spatial distribution of U.S. household carbon footprints reveals suburbanization undermines greenhouse gas benefits of urban population density.

Which municipalities and locations within the United States contribute the most to household greenhouse gas emissions, and what is the effect of population density and suburbanization on emissions? Using national household surveys, we developed econometric models of demand for energy, transportation, food, goods, and services that were used to derive average household carbon footprints (HCF) fo...

Grassroots Efforts in Contemporary Urban Mapping: An Analysis of Alternative Uses of Collaborative Platforms

Technologies have started to overlap new virtual communication and information layers on top of the urban physical territory, thus bringing along distinct possibilities of social organization. Regarding this phenomenon and intending to achieve improvement in a great variety of fields from Politics to Urban Planning, the terms of Smart or Digital Cities among others have been adopted, still with...

Spatial distribution and degree of heavy metal pollution in urban roadside dusts from Sanandaj, Iran

Industrial activities and high traffic density are the most important heavy metal pollution sources in urban areas. Roadside dust created by atmospheric deposition can be one of the best indicators for heavy metal contamination levels. The present study reports the spatial distribution patterns and degree of heavy metal pollution (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, and As) in 50 roadside dust samples from urb...

Automatic Building Extraction from DEMs using an Object Approach and Application to the 3D-city Modeling

In this paper, we present an automatic building extraction method based on an object approach from Digital Elevation Models. First, a rough approximation of the building footprints is realized by a method based on marked point processes: the building footprints are modeled by rectangle layouts. Then, these rectangular footprints are regularized by improving the connection between the neighborin...
